Extend life of your Brother Toner Cartridge

by admin on September 3, 2011

The Brother HL-5250DN is a fantastic mono laser printer. But it does moan about toner a lot. In fact, if you change your cartridge when the “toner low” warning light first goes on, you’ll lose out on loads of perfectly good page impressions. So here’s a video demonstrating how to get every last particle of toner out of a cartridge.

Quick video on how to reset the Brother TN-210 Black, Yellow, Magenta, Cyan cartridge. Your printer will say you are out of toner and lock up far before you are truly out of toner. Once the flag gear is reset you should be able to practically double the output of the cartridge before you need to refill or replace it. Please note that the flag gear is NOT present on the teaser cartridges that come with the printer. A flag gear can be purchased online if desired. JUST REMEMBER!!! By doing this you are recirculating waste toner in your cartridge over and over again causing premature wear and failure to the drum unit. The unit is $100. plus tax and your quality will suffer too. I worked on printers and serviced them for over 10yrs. It’s ok to do this to finsh a perticular job , but then you should replace the cartridge due to it not having an external waste bend. pay me now or pay me more later

This does work.

ralree September 3, 2011 at 3:22 PM

Just worked on an HL-2070N I have. There’s 2 windows, just cover up both with tape, and voila! Saved me from a midterm I needed printed notes for!

rawimpact September 3, 2011 at 4:05 PM

Can you refill the toner using toner refill from ebay and then tape the window and run that until the toner refills and repeat?

pigletto78 September 3, 2011 at 4:25 PM

Thanks! I’ll try it tomorrow :)

hemantrocks September 3, 2011 at 4:53 PM

exelente, este metodo funciono a la perfeccion recargen el tonner original con tinta alternativa y segan los pasos que dio el socio aqui arriva. 100% seguro a mi me funciono a la perfeccion 100% recomendable este metodo…

thecaryrices September 3, 2011 at 5:43 PM

I’d rather reset the cartridges individually using this method rather than reset the whole printer. Had to do this after I got the black cartridge refilled at a local shop, I’m a bit miffed they didn’t reset the cartridge there and I had to do it.

wannabe1rn September 3, 2011 at 5:46 PM

Thank you SOOOO much, OMG Brothers just rips you off. They should give the printers away for free cause the original toner costs a mint. Anyway, TY for this demo. It worked PERFECTLY.

@terracore – um, i’m feeling a little daft here…but stage 4) “press the + button…..Um…where is the + button on the printer – I’m using a KFC 9120CN.

Maybe just staring at it….but….trying me silly :-)

avio171 September 3, 2011 at 6:57 PM

@terracore Do you know if it is possible do this kind of ‘button reset’ also for the Brother HL 2035? Thanks for answer :)

avio171 September 3, 2011 at 7:45 PM

@terracore THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS !!!!!

irulethe70s September 3, 2011 at 8:30 PM

Cover the clear hole on the toner!

avio171 September 3, 2011 at 9:15 PM

@terracore Thanks!!! It works this too :)

paragmehta123 September 3, 2011 at 9:19 PM

thanks for the great tip!

VTScooter September 3, 2011 at 9:47 PM

Awesome, worked for me!!! I was getting ready to return the cartridge as I have only used it a hand full of times. Now that I know this I will be sure to get every drop out of the cartridge before buying a new one. They are to pricey to waste the toner that is in them.

wpepoon September 3, 2011 at 10:28 PM

Great advice! My 3070 gave me a “replace toner” message after replacing the starter Cyan toner, and then told me to replace all the other colors, including black. I did this and still got a “replace toner” message for Cyan. I probably just wasted a lot of toner before finding this solution. Thanks.

RealEstateRoller September 3, 2011 at 10:39 PM

did twice but still shows low ink, but it’s newer so ????

normcdn September 3, 2011 at 10:44 PM

I bought HL-3040CN few months ago. I am still using the original ink cartridges. Last week, I refilled the black one (K) and with the menu reset the printer. Everything is fine. No need to install reset gears. I dumped the remaining ink and shake it well then refilled if with ink I bought on eBay. When I refill the cartridge with the whole bottle. The ink level was almost to the top, probably 10 times more than what it is having when I bought the printer.

manooti September 3, 2011 at 10:46 PM

@terracore nice work man. it worked and printed over 100 pages! still printing too without any errors. life saver right here

eloslav September 3, 2011 at 11:05 PM

It works, a big big tanks, it couldn’t be better….

theAppleAficionado September 3, 2011 at 11:51 PM

@pristineauction
what will happen if you already use the starter cartridges twice and those are not working anymore. Do you have to buy original cartridges(around $200), or can you use non-original cartridges like those on ebay(less than $100), and then refill those with bulk toner?

terracore September 4, 2011 at 12:31 AM

What a waste of time. All you need to do is:

1) Turn the printer off and then on again.

2) Open cover.

3) Press Cancel and Secure Print buttons at the same time.

4) Press the + button and scroll through the colors that need to be reset. (reset both STR and STD when prompted. I just reset them all.

5) Press OK (twice, once for STR and STD)

6) You’re done. You don’t even need to take the cartridges out and the printer thinks you just installed four new toner cartridges.

Thanks for the information in this video. Question – like all the rest, my TN-210 does not have a flag gear, however, I am able to do a software cartridge reset from the 3070CW menu – will I still need the gear for some reason? I appreciate the response!

Benjamin.

khbcweb September 4, 2011 at 2:11 AM

I have wasted money before buying new ones and the way they are so expensive. Wish I knew how to reset it – Pooor me!!!!

pusha412 September 4, 2011 at 2:39 AM

Wow can’t believe this works and how easy it is to actually do.

homamkeh September 4, 2011 at 2:45 AM

@pristineauction i could not find flag gears for the tn-210. do you know a specific online store i can get it from? no luck on ebay either. thanks again, this video was helpful

pristineauction September 4, 2011 at 3:43 AM

@delinquent2002 It works! Let me know if you have any issues. I would be happy to help.

pristineauction September 4, 2011 at 4:28 AM

@homamkeh The starter cartridges DO NOT have a flag gear. You can purchase them – and install them on the starter cartridges – online from a company that provides refill products.

homamkeh September 4, 2011 at 4:49 AM

will this work with starter cartridges? (the cartridges that came with the printer)
